  • Not available to those who receive assistance under the Asylum Seekers' Benefits Act. Not available to those who have brought about their own hardship in the past 10 years - by giving away of squandering assets - and not considering how to provide for themselves in old age. Recourse is made to children with an annual income over EUR 100,000 if their parents claim needs-based pension supplement. Retirement age is going up to 67 years over the next years, with 1 month added every year. (65 years plus 5 months in 2016). This also applies to the pension supplement.

  • The German states (Länder) are able to adjust the amount of payment to take account of local conditions. If a person who is entitled to needs-based pension supplement is unable to finance an undeniable need that cannot be met by means of the monthly payment, the assistance provider must provide a loan which is then paid back by deducting small monthly instalments from future monthly payments (Section 37 of SGB XII).
