Ekiti State

In 2011 Ekiti State, in the southwest of Nigeria, established a social pension for older people - the first of its kind in West Africa. In this video Governor Kayode Fayemi launches the scheme and makes the first payments to beneficiaries. In 2012 the government announced the aim to reach 20,000 people. See our Knowledge Centre for more information.

Osun State

In 2012 Osun State, which neighbours Ekiti State, also implemented a social pension for older people. The scheme provides N10,000 (around 64US$) a month to those who have been identified as 'unable to fend for themselves'. Calls have already been made within Osun to extend the scheme, which currently aims to target just 1,602 older people. See our Knowledge Centre for more information.
